Merrimon and Broadway
Corner of Merrimon Avenue and Broadway Avenue
Asheville, NC 28801
Asheville, NC 28801
At the corner of Merrimon and Broadway Avenues in Asheville was the sit of frequent town hangings during the 19th century. In 1835, after allegedly stealing a horse, James Sneed and James Henry were convicted and hanged at this very spot. The two men proclaimed their combined innocence until their deaths at the hands of the townsfolk. As such, there have been reports of the sounds of galloping hooves, wagon wheels, and opening gallows doors.
