Mordecai House is a former plantation home built in 1785 and exists today as the oldest residence in Raleigh on its original foundation. Originally constructed by Joel Lane for his son Henry, Lane sold nearly a thousand acres from his plantation to the founder of Raleigh, thus giving Lane significant credit to the beginnings of the city. Around the time of the land sale, Moses Mordecai bought the home in 1817, which gave it the name it has today.

Mary Willis Mordecai Turk is said to haunt the home, where she has been spotted playing the piano in a period dress. Her fascination with the piano has extended into her being seen as a floating orb or fine mist hovering around it.
